Photograph of grave robbers or tomb raiders (huacero) looting pre-Hispanic graves for artifacts between Sipan and Chicalayo in the Lambayeque Valley of Northern Peru. The men and boys (huaceros) dig an Inca huaca and find Inca, Chimu and Moche culture artifacts, mostly beads and pottery shards. They use screen frames to sift the soil and clay around the tombs for small objects. They find many beads made of seashells. Archeology and protection of archeological sites is complicated by uncontrolled looters. Hundreds of illegal digging sites dot the landscape at the ancient site of Dubrum, a Sumerian city, buried near the village of Dhahir in southern Iraq. Thousands of archaeological sites have been left unprotected by an underfunded antiquities police force that only has 106 officers. http://www.cleveland.com/world/index.ssf/2010/06/looters_stealing_from_iraqs_un.html
